I prefer paper bags to plastic and keep reusing paper ones until they fall apart. For reasons that have nothing to do with logic, I take canvas bags to the Farmers' Market but not to the supermarket.

Slightly tainted supermarket plastic bags are fine for stuff that will be thrown away: fish bones and skin, noncompostable vegetable matter (corn husks, melon rinds, citrus skins, etc that are too tough for a home compost bin), doggie doo, kitty litter, diapers.

I'm with you Judy! I'll commit to bringing my cloth bags, no matter what. After this post's info and the experience I had at Safeway last night, I'm convinced we each have to be responsible and can't rely on big grocery chains.
